On October 29 we held our annual Halloween celebration at The Waterford compete with costumes and pumpkin carving! Some of the pumpkins were hallowed out for residents to carve (one resident even went up to his room to get his drill to carve his pumpkin!) and the others we decorated with accessories such as glasses, masks and noses.
Later that day we held a costume party where both staff and residents dressed up. Many residents got into the spirit and dressed up with witches hats and the like but the clear winner of our costume contest went to Mary, who dressed up as Rita the Recycler. She had recyclables hanging off of her and a warning for people to ‘Recycle or else!’
We hired ‘Suede Dog’ as the entertainment for the party, who are always lots of fun and they came dressed up as Mr. and Mrs. Dracula. The recreation staff as well as the General Manager decided to dress up as the characters from the Wizard of Oz which was great, so we had Dorthy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and Glinda the Good Witch.
Diane, one of our recreation coordinators had an extra surprise for everyone when she performed a short skit with one of our residents as ‘Auntie Em’ and then broke out into a song, singing “Over the Rainbow” of course!
To wrap of the party the Wizard of Oz ‘cast’ went up to the care floor for dinner to visit with the residents and show off their costumes. Then they performed the song, “We’re off to see the Wizard” while skipping down the halls, to mimic the way they do in the movie when they’re walking down the Yellow Brick Road. Everything came together wonderfully and the residents loved it!
