Crafts are a fun way for seniors to express themselves creatively and possibly even learn something new. When you exercise the creative part of the brain, it’s great for your emotional and mental health. When you make something from scratch, it’s incredibly satisfying to see the finished product. There’s nothing quite like the sense of accomplishment you feel when you complete a project.
Crafts for Seniors
Need some cool craft ideas for the season? Here are a few of our favourite ideas for fall projects.
Colour a gorgeous fall scene
If you think colouring is just for kids, think again! In recent years, adult colouring books have become incredibly popular. Many people find the act of colouring to be quite calming. In fact, some psychologists claim that colouring has similar benefits to meditation. To turn this into a fun fall craft, simply search online for autumn-themed colouring pages. There are tons of free options available – you just have to print them off. If you want to make it competitive, you can turn it into a content and offer prizes for the best pieces.
Make a door wreath
Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas decorations! They’re a great way to dress up your door at any time of year. For fall, take inspiration from what you see in nature at this time of the year. Go outside and collect an assortment of gorgeous colourful leaves, along with things like pine cones, acorns, or anything else that reminds you of fall. (You could also use dried flowers or fake leaves if you want to create a wreath that you can keep for years to come.) You can use a store bought wreath form, or keep things simple; cut a circle out of the centre of a paper plate and use this as your base. Next, attach your leaves and decorations with glue. Once everything is dry, you’ll have a gorgeous custom wreath.
Paint a festive pumpkin
Carved pumpkins are a classic Halloween decoration. However, seniors may have some difficulty with the sharp knives needed to carve jack-o’-lanterns. Painting pumpkins or small gourds is a fantastic alternative that’s much easier for seniors. All you need is a pumpkin of any size, an assortment of paint, and some small paint brushes. Tip: lay our some newspaper on a table before you begin to make cleanup easier.
Bake some yummy fall treats
Baking is a great way to have some fall fun! If you want to get creative, choose something that requires some decoration like sugar cookies, cupcakes, or anything Halloween themed. You can also go with classic fall flavours like gingersnap cookies, pies, or drinks like spiced apple cider. The best part about baking is that you get to enjoy the treats when you’re done!
Paint an outdoor scene
Many seniors find painting to be an incredibly relaxing and rewarding pastime. Watercolours, oil painting on a canvas, and splatter painting are all great ways to create a fall-themed scene. Get inspired by the brilliant colours you see outdoors at this time of year and let your imagination run wild.

We’re making fall wreaths, painting pumpkins, making fall table centerpieces, painting fence posts into scarecrows. In addition to these seasonal sessions, we also have art programs that run all year long, to allow our residents to have fun, express themselves, and learn something new.
