Magnolia Gardens retirement community residents are making the most of pandemic winter days by getting crafty with a purpose. Lois Ketcheson, Jean Miller, and Margaret Krsanac have been painting hundreds of pumpkin seeds that they turn into festive poinsettia-like Christmas decorations. Residents and staff have been buying up the Christmas creations, and all the funds raised go to support the Langley Food Bank.
“It started as a craft project,” says Holly Dorn, Recreation Manager at Magnolia Gardens, “But it turned into a good way to give back to the community.” The handmade items are one of many fundraising activities for residents to participate in this season. Holly’s office is overflowing with wrapped and bagged gifts that are part of the 24 days of Christmas fundraiser she organizes for residents. Out in the hallway is a raffle table displaying beautiful hand-knit creations residents can enter to win. More handmade products are available for residents to purchase in the Tuck Shop.
For seniors at Magnolia Gardens, like other senior living communities in BC, the Provincial Health Officer’s latest orders mean limited trips outside their home and few visits from loved ones—especially challenging circumstances at Christmas time. Holly and her team want to ensure residents stay focussed on the good: “December could be a tough month, but instead of thinking about all the things we don’t have, we’re going to think about ways to give to the community.”
