It started in March when the Bee Well Project Chief Beekeeper visited all four Bria Communities, sharing about the wonder of the honeybee and offering samples of deliciously sweet honey.
As the months went by, the seniors learned more about the hives they were sponsoring and even had an opportunity to clean and paint the bee boxes their bees would use to build wax honeycomb and store the honey.
In June, bus trips to the Southlands Tsawwassen apiary were sometimes thwarted by bad weather, and seniors waved at their bees as they drove by on their way to a cozy candle rolling session at the Red Barn or lunch at Four Winds Brewery.
By August, the bees had done all the hard work, and Chief Beekeeper Julia arrived with boxes loaded with frames of capped honey and her marvelous travelling honey extrator—and that’s when things started to get sticky!
You can watch what harvesting more than 100 lbs of honey looks like for each of Bria Communities seniors residences!…
