A Warm Welcome Makes All The Difference

Welcome Ambassadors Help Seniors Feel at Home in Bria Communities

Moving into a senior living community is a big life change. Even when the decision feels right, it can still come with nerves, questions, and uncertainty. That’s why Welcome Ambassadors play such an important role within Bria Communities—helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and confident from the very beginning.

“Our Welcome Ambassadors are residents themselves,” notes Tanya Snow, Director of Bria Communities. “They understand the emotions that come with a move because they’ve been there too.”

Sally, a resident of Sunridge Gardens for over 10 years, has served as a Welcome Ambassador for at least eight of those years. “When someone moves in, I show them around, explain what goes on in different areas.” She is intentional not to overwhelm newcomers, “I pace it to what they’re capable of doing. Everyone’s different.”

Tanya Snow notes that the role is simple yet meaningful. “The ambassadors show them around, introduce them to others, learning about their interests, and help them navigate their new surroundings. It’s not rushed. It’s personal. And it’s led with kindness.”

“I Didn’t Expect All This!”

One of the most common things Sally hears from new residents is surprise—especially around the conveniences and supports available right on site.

From monthly blood pressure checks and hearing aid cleanings to flu shot clinics and even on-site voting stations, many residents are amazed at how easy life becomes.

“They don’t have to run all over town,” Sally says. “These are the things that really surprise them—and make life simpler.” This ease allows residents to focus less on errands and logistics, and more on living well, staying social, and doing the things they enjoy.

Sally’s Advice for Those Getting Ready to Move

Straight-talking, Sally has seen many new residents move in over the years. She has some practical suggestions: “Bring the things you truly use and love—your favourite chair, your TV, your computer. But you don’t need pots and pans. You don’t have to cook. Someone else does the heavy cleaning. It’s a bit of a ‘life of Riley!’”

For Anyone Feeling Nervous: You’re Not Alone

Sally acknowledges that the all-inclusive way of life can take a little bit of getting used it.

“It’s a different lifestyle,” she tells newcomers. “Think of it like living in a hotel or on a cruise ship. Some people settle in quickly; others take a few months. Don’t panic. No one’s judging you—we all went through it.”

Her advice is simple and empowering: show up when you’re ready. Sit and watch. Join in when it feels right. Be as busy—or as relaxed—as you want to be.

Purpose Doesn’t Retire

Programs like the Welcome Ambassador initiative are good for new residents, but the opportunity to volunteer in a meaningful way has it’s own reward. “I like meeting people, learning about them, and there’s a feeling of achievement that you’ve done something to help your fellow resident,”  notes Sally.

“That’s a powerful feeling!,” says Tanya. “We as humans thrive when we use our skills, experience, and time in ways that feel useful and fulfilling. Being a Welcome Ambassador is a purpose-driven role. It empowers residents to give back, build friendships, and be actively involved in the life of their community.”

A Community That Welcomes You In

“Our Welcome Ambassadors play a vital role in our homes,” reflects Tanya Snow, “They are the first step in seniors feeling connected, purposeful and cared for as they move into their new chapter
