Independent Living in Tsawwassen & Langley
In your 20s, moving was an adventure. An opportunity! In your 40s, moving typically reflected a change in lifestyle or a change of jobs. You did it mostly for practical reasons.
In your 70s, 80s or 90s? Moving has the potential to be stressful, especially if you are hesitant about your decision. The Wexford’s Manager, Rosanne Philbrook understands how hard it can be. “Moving can cause anxiety and it can be stressful at any age,” Rosanne explains. “Living in the same home for fifty years is a wonderful thing.” But when it’s time to leave, Rosanne says her mission is to ensure the move is as seamless as possible. She works hard to make it a positive and exciting experience.
The transition can be smooth and even exciting with the right support and resources. At BRIA’s newest property in Tsawwassen opening in 2016, Rosanne will see to it. It is her goal to ease the decision and transition for every resident who decides to move in.
Separating treasures from trash
One of the biggest challenges in a move is how to handle ‘your stuff.’ If you’ve spent a few decades or more in a house, there’s no doubt you’ve collected plenty of clothes and furniture, not to mention kitchenware and memorabilia.
So what do you bring? What do you sell? What do you give away? All good questions!
It’s all up to personal choice, but having someone help you sort through it can drastically lighten the burden of the decisions. Gather family members or friends to help. And talk to Rosanne: she can even put you in touch with moving companies who will assist you with packing and unpacking.
Getting used to your new digs
“Residents often say to me they wished they’d moved in much sooner,” Rosanne states. “It may take a few months for a senior to feel settled in an independent living community,” says Rosanne. “But for others, it’s mere days.” Regardless, day by day, there are new friendships forged, new routines established and new activities to try.
