Congratulations. You made a big decision to move your loved one into a seniors community care centre. You made sure that you chose a community where they can flourish and start an exciting new chapter, a place where they can direct their own lives and receive the support they need. Bria Communities is just the kind of place you wanted, but now… what’s next?
What Sets Bria Communities Apart?
First off, you can rest easy knowing that your loved one will receive the very best support and attention. All staff at Bria are always ready to assist residents with whatever they need. They’re are attentive and caring, and they take the time to cultivate great relationships with them. Our goal is to ensure everyone is as comfortable as they can be in their home.
This level of care and support extends beyond the residents themselves. The staff at Bria Communities are also there to see that friends and family members are equally comfortable. We’re always ready to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.
Moving Into a BriaCare™ Centre
Our goal is to make the process of moving into a BriaCare™ Centre as easy as possible for residents and their families. From the first steps of the application process to moving day and beyond, this guide will assist you in getting your loved one ready for their next big move.
Prepare Your Application
Now that you’ve decided on Bria Communities as the perfect place for your loved one, you’ll need to start the application process. First off, we’ll need to do a resident assessment to determine the level of assistance they will need, and make sure we can safely look after their needs. From there, some paperwork will need to be filled out. This can be done by either the resident or by their substitute decision maker.
Provide Medical Details
All residents also need to have a local doctor that is able to make house calls if necessary. If you don’t have a primary care physician that is located nearby, the Director of Care may be able to assist you in finding a new doctor. You’ll also need to provide a detailed medical history and any current medical information, such as orders for medications. Lastly, you’ll need to provide us with a list of people who have been approved to accompany the resident off the premises, should the resident not be safe to leave the Care Centre on their own.
Get Ready for Move-In
Ideally, you’ll want to get the living space ready a few days before the actual move-in. We supply a hospital bed, and an optional wardrobe, dresser and nightstand. Any additional furniture can be moved in a day or two ahead of time, so everything is set up and ready to welcome the resident on their first day.
We suggest that you set up the room with familiar furnishings, photos and personal touches. It’s best to not bring any large pieces of furniture, since the staff needs to be able to easily around the room. For added security, we encourage residents to keep their valuables off site or with family members for safekeeping, and to bring them in for special occasions.
You’ll also need to label all clothing with the resident’s name and room number. We ask that all clothing is marked prior to admission and new items are labelled upon purchase. We provide iron-on labels and laundry markers should you need them.
You’ll also want to set up a Comfort Fund for the resident. BriaCare™ Centres are essentially ‘cashless’, and there is no reason for residents to carry cash. The Comfort Fund is a trust account, which we use to cover any additional costs for the resident. We recommend an initial deposit of $150 to start. Statements for the account are provided monthly, so you can keep track of spending.
Moving Day
On moving day, you will be greeted by the nurse and shown to your suite. You’ll need to complete some additional admissions forms, and then the nurse will do a quick physical assessment. After that, you’ll be able to tour the care centre together and then stay to enjoy time together.
We aim to make this big life transition as smooth as possible, and to make sure that all our residents feel comfortable and at ease in their new living space. While they might feel a bit nervous at first, they’ll soon be as cosy as can be at Bria Communities.
