Thriving Without Driving

Going car-free is easier than ever before. Improvements to public transportation, the rising costs of gas and insurance, and the environmental impact are all factors in seniors choosing to hang up their car keys.

“I think more and more seniors are opting into a lifestyle that doesn’t include a car,” says Matthew Jackson, General Manager of The Waterford Seniors Community in Tsawwassen, BC. And seniors are discovering that there are benefits that go beyond the money they save.

“Many of our residents chose to stop driving when they move in, and they tell me it’s a weight off their shoulders,” remarks Matt. “You don’t have to worry about driving at night, heavy traffic or icy roads.”

Life is simpler without a car, but Matt notes that planning ahead will help the transition. “With a little planning and research, I believe it’s possible to actually look forward to the day when you no longer have to drive.”

FIVE TIPS TO GO CAR-FREE

  • Choose to live in a walkable neighbourhood. Prioritize being close to shops, medical services, and civic amenities like libraries and recreation centres. Sidewalks and crosswalks are a must!

  • Make transit a hobby and a habit. Challenge yourself to understand and use bus schedules to get to exciting destinations. Take advantage of discounts for senior riders.

  • Electric trikes, bikes and scooters are considerably cheaper to purchase and easier to operate than a car! Advancements in design, safety and accessibility make it easy for seniors to use them for their everyday needs.

  • All-inclusive senior living communities provide everything you need in-house. You won’t need to drive for shopping, errands or visiting. Bria Communities even offers a personal courtesy shuttle service for residents as well as regular group excursions in a 18-passenger bus.

  • Know your options. There are many driving services, and some cater specifically to older adults. Investigate no-cost options like HandyDART. Find out if your local seniors centre offers a volunteer driver program that you can use.
