In Canada, an estimated 747,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Experts expect the number to nearly double to 1.4 million by 2031.
Jane Bryce, General Manager of The Wexford, is one of many who have faced Alzheimer’s in their family. Her mother-in-law Ann lived with and died of Alzheimer’s, an experience that rattled the entire family. “My father-in-law, Herb, dealt with the devastation by writing poetry,” says Jane.” His poetry has been a source of healing for all of us.”
“This disease robs people of everything,” reflects Jane. Working in senior living for about twenty years has given her the opportunity to walk alongside so many daughters, siblings, husbands and wives who stand by as their loved ones fade away. “It feels wrong to stand by and not do anything. I want to do something to support people like Ann and Herb.”
This year, Jane and The Wexford Team are harnessing the power of their first-rate culinary team to host a Street Food Festival and raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society of BC. “The Alzheimer’s Society of BC provides critical support, education and advocacy for people living with Alzheimer’s. They also fund life-changing research,” Jane notes. “We want to be part of that and invite the people of Tsawwassen to join us.”
Diverse flavours and vibrant cuisine are the signatures of street food, and that’s what you’ll find in the parking lot of The Wexford on Saturday, June 15, from 11:30 – 2 pm. 1737 56 St. Each purchase supports the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.
“We’ve got something exciting for everyone,” says Executive Chef Sean McCarthy as he rattles off the details of a Thai Chicken Taco, West Coast BBQ Salmon Naanwich, Cheeseburger Sliders, Caprese Focaccia Stacker, Peri-Peri Fries, Ultra-Lemon-Ade and more. It’s all homemade, and it’s all delicious,” he guarantees.
Hungry guests participating in the Street Food Festival can enjoy each item on the menu for $5, with a portion of each ticket going towards the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.
“We know people like to mix and match,” says Chef Sean. “We want to give you the option to sample a bit of everything.” Five-dollar tickets are purchased at the main cashier and can be used at any of six stations. “If you want three Thai Chicken Tacos and a side of Peri Peri Fries, that’s your business. And we’ll be happy to serve it up,” says Sean.
Sit down and enjoy your street food selections while listening to Live music by Gerry and Trevor Layton. The father-son duo will rock you through the decades and across continents with their signature guitar-centric sound.
