Beyond the Kitchen Doors: How Bria Chefs Engage, Educate, and Inspire Residents

When Executive Chef, Scott Hiebert steps behind the bar counter in Murphy’s Pub at Magnolia Garden, residents know something delicious is about to happen! Chef-led food demonstrations are an exciting part of the Lifestyle and Wellness programming in all four Bria Communities.

“We get a chance to show residents some techniques, talk about new menu items, or just play around a bit,” says Chef Scott. Pad Thai, homemade ice cream and potato pancakes are among the items Chef Scott has introduced to residents during these ‘Tasty Creations’ sessions.

These demos are an opportunity to remind residents that their food is freshly made daily in the kitchen on-site. “Sometimes even our residents are surprised at the standards we have around our cuisine,” says Magnolia Gardens General Manager Pam Murphy. “They think we’re using powdered eggs and potatoes or pulling pre-made things out of the freezer, but in fact, our standard is to make 80% right in our kitchen.”

At The Waterford in Tsawwassen, Executive Chef Matthew Baryluk uses food demonstrations to engage residents at  in conversations about what they’re eating. He may fillet a turbot or a halibut or show different cuts of beef, but residents will see these items on their plates shortly after the demonstration. He’s also known to give kitchen tours so residents can peek behind the curtain where the magic happens.

“I want our residents to know they have a say in everything,” says Chef Matt. “Bringing the food out of the kitchen and letting them look and ask questions help develop trust and relationship.”

These chef-led food demonstrations are more than just a showcase of culinary skill—they’re a way to build connections, spark conversations, and reinforce BriaCuisine’s high standards. By inviting residents to be part of the process, the chefs create an experience that goes beyond the plate, making every meal something to look forward to.
