In 2020, a remarkable 10-year study revealed that volunteering for just two hours a week has significant physical and psychological benefits for seniors. In fact, the study found it even reduced the risk of mortality!

National Volunteer Week is April 19-26, and it’s the perfect opportunity to remember that volunteering helps everyone…especially those who do it!

Heartfelt Connections

For 92-year-old Desley, a resident at The Wexford in Tsawwassen, the motivation is simple: “It makes me feel good, and it helps me feel better.” Whether she is helping run bingo or making flower arrangements for the dining room tables, Desley recognizes that service is the ultimate mood-lifter. “When I’m down, I feel better if I do something for someone else,” she shares.

Over at Magnolia Gardens in Langley, Roger is a regular volunteer. You can often find him in the workshop building yard games for fellow residents to enjoy, but one of his favourite volunteer jobs is as Resident Ambassador. “I get to spend a lot of time helping new residents, and I truly enjoy it. It’s very hands-on.” He adds with a laugh, “It keeps me out of trouble!”
