This past week Sunridge Gardens welcomed a visit from Cindy Ashton, a registered Physiotherapist who specializes in home visits with seniors. Cindy provided us all with a description of what physiotherapists do, what a home visit would entail, the importance of staying active as well as tips for fall prevention and being safe in your home.
She explained that physiotherapists are experts in movement and mobility, body mechanics, muscles and joints. They will help develop an exercise program specially tailored to a residents needs, putting together the right combination of activities to improve physical fitness and avoid injury. She reminded us all that it is never too late to take the first step towards a longer and healthier life, through regular exercise.
She also explained that researchers have found that exercise isn’t just for older adults who live independently and are still very active, but that exercise and physical activity can also improve the health of people who are 90 and older, who are frail, or have diseases that seem to accompany aging.
In addition, she gave us great tips on safety in the home like removing any throw rugs or mats that could be a tripping hazard and keeping your home obstacle free, especially if you need a walker for assistance. To conclude the session, Cindy answered all the questions that our residents had about their own personal physical concerns that they were facing and gave some advice on what steps to take.
All of the residents (and staff) found the session very informative and we thank Cindy for a very professional and informative session!
