At The Waterford and The Wexford Seniors Communities in Tsawwassen, BC, community spirit is alive and well — and it’s packed between two slices of bread!
Every month, a cheerful crew of seniors rolls up their sleeves and makes more than 250 peanut butter and jam sandwiches to support Food on the Corner, a volunteer-run group serving people living on Vancouver’s Downtown East Side.
It’s a simple but powerful act of kindness. Food on the Corner has been delivering homemade soup, sandwiches, coffee, and sweet treats to those in need every Saturday since 1983 — all thanks to volunteers who care enough to lend a hand (and in this case, a sandwich knife). You can learn more about their incredible work at foodonthecorner.ca.
April is Volunteer Month, and there’s no better time to celebrate the joy of giving back. Residents across Bria Communities serve in many capacities: tending to libraries and gardens, supporting newcomers to their communities, and even knitting for a good cause.
But here’s the sweet secret: volunteering isn’t just good for the people who receive help—it’s fantastic for the volunteers, too!
Our sandwich-making squads aren’t just making lunches — they’re making friends, finding purpose, staying active, and even boosting their own health and happiness. Research shows that seniors who volunteer enjoy better mental health, more social connection, and even live longer. It turns out that helping others is one of the best ways to help yourself feel good, too.
