National Seniors Day is an opportunity to celebrate Canadian seniors. For the second year, Bria Communities will celebrate in Langley and Tsawwassen by giving away free pie.
In Tsawwassen, preparations are underway for the second annual Drive-Thru Pie Pick-up. “Everyone is extra cautious these days and so finding creative ways to appreciate seniors is challenging,” says Jane Bryce, General Manager of The Wexford Seniors’ Community, where the drive-thru event will be held. “But last year’s pie drive-thru was awesome. It checked all the safety boxes and gave seniors something they love—homemade pie. People were so delighted that they got a whole pie, not just a slice!”
This year, the feature give-away pie, The Autumn Crumble, was developed by Chef Sean McCarthy at The Wexford. It includes a tasty pecan-coconut crumble over a smooth yam filling with a surprise ingredient—Chinese five-spice. “It’s a twist on a traditional Thanksgiving pie, and it definitely tastiest when served warm,” says McCarthy. He also notes that his mom gets credit for the crust, as he borrowed the recipe from her.
In Langley, a partner event with Langley Senior Resources Society gives seniors who attend the event the opportunity to sample slices of Chef Sean’s pie at the ‘It’s Fall Y’All Pie Social.’
“These in-person events are really special to us,” says Sherri Martin, Community Relations & Residency Coordinator for Bria Communities. “Langley seniors are still really enjoying the novelty of being able to spend time together. We’re all looking forward to eating pie, playing some trivia games, and maybe even taking home a full-size pie as a door prize.”
National Seniors Day in Canada coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons; it celebrates and appreciates seniors’ contributions to our homes and communities. “Seniors make our communities and our lives richer,” notes Jane, “and the least we can do is give away some delicious pie.”
Chef Sean and Chef Matthew Baryluk of The Waterford will prepare and package 100 pies to give away to seniors at the drive-thru event at The Wexford (1737 56 St.) on Friday, 01 October between 10–11:30 am. Safety and health precautions are top priority in this event; seniors are invited to stay in their cars to receive their pie, and contact tracing and masks will be part of the safety protocol.
The ‘It’s Fall Y’all Pie Social’ is happening from 1-3 pm on Friday, 01 October on-site at LSRS. For information about tickets call: 604.530.3020
