October Waterford Highlights

valentines day at The Waterford

Congratulations to Kay Andrews!  A long time resident at The Waterford celebrates her 100th birthday.  Kay was surrounded by friends and family with the Jennifer Lauren on piano.

October 23rd The Waterford spent the afternoon with her sister site, at Sunridge Gardens in Langley.  With a warm welcome by Sunridge residents and staff we were made to feel right at home. The day included a half hour sing a long with their very own Glee club followed by lunch, a stroll around the grounds and bingo.  Thank you Sunridge for a wonderful day.

Once and again we had our sandwich making for ‘Food on the Corner’ for Vancouver’s eastside. (Oct. 25th and Nov. 1st)   We had 12 volunteers working together to make 235 sandwiches for each of those days. That’s 470 sandwiches!  What team effort!

Oct. 29th we had our annual Halloween celebration with pumpkin carving at 2:00 and a Halloween costume party with ‘Suede Dog’ as entertainment.  The residents went all out this year.  This year’s winner was Mary Wight who dressed up as Rita the Recycler.  What an imagination!

The staff also participated bringing The Wizard of Oz to The Waterford with Craig as the Lion, Rosanne as the Scarecrow, Trey as the Tin Man and Diane as Dorothy.

On Wednesday, October 30th we had an afternoon filled with fun and games. The afternoon looked like this:

  • Some of our residents tested their senses when blind folded.  They were asked to touch different foods and to specify which body part it might be. For example peeled grapes would be eye balls.  Dried apricots would be ears.  Spaghetti would be intestines.  A latex glove would be a hand.  And so on.
  • Halloween Trivia
  • We had two teams create two mummies by wrapping toilet paper around two volunteers. Who ever was the most creative and the quickest was the winner.
  • The residents gathered into teams and competed with each other doing crossword puzzles, word search, and put the pumpkin puzzle back together.

This wonderful afternoon ended with Kathy Knox (Waterford resident) playing old time songs. The day was a lot of fun.

Thursday, October 31st was the announcement of the Best Door Decorating Contest.  Grace Malnarich won first prize.  Amy and Ron Jacobson won second prize.  Followed by Joe Taylor who came in Third. First prize for Best Pumpkin carving was won by Billie Buckingham.  Second prize went to Ron and Amy Jacobson. Third prize was won by Phil Cashmore and Jo Stephens. What a spooktacular week.
