Each year the Recreation Team at Sunridge Gardens plans a big, fun-filled, themed family BBQ for our residents and their families. This year our theme was “The Wild West”. A few days prior to the party we put up “Wanted Posters” of residents and staff with aliases like “Big Hoss Bob” and “No Toes Norman”. There was quite a buzz created around these funny posters and the upcoming BBQ.
During the party residents were dressed up in their cowboy/girl finest and all enjoyed the live country music played by “Smith and Jones”. We served hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch with baked beans and pasta salad. We also served ice cold beer which was a big hit as the day was roasting hot. Luckily we planned for the bright sunny weather and rented many canopies for shade. We also prepared a scavenger hunt for the kids, as well as water balloon games, horse races and crafts.
Between our management, marketing, recreation and maintenance departments, together we had a big surprise for our residents when we performed “The Boot Scootin Boogy” line dance. We practiced hard as none of us, except for Jane in marketing, possess much rhythm or coordination but in the end the resident’s loved it and we had lots of fun showing off our moves. Another special contribution to our party was made by our afternoon receptionist, Andrea. She created a cowboy photo prop with so much talent and detail. Our maintenance man Scott built a great frame for it and the residents all had a hoot standing behind it to have their photo taken.
As Recreation Coordinator I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful team to work along with and in the end, our shared goal of having a spectacular event for our residents and their loved ones to enjoy is something that we can all be proud of.
